HK Cross Country went down to Six Flags New Jersey this weekend and had another day of success at the Wild Safari Invitational. Part of the course went through the safari park with bison and elk sightings. Of the six races we ran in, HK took home 5 team awards. Boys varsity 1st, girls varsity 1st, boys JV 1st, Boys freshman 1st and Girls freshman 3rd. We also had 3 individual race wins with Kelsey D’Amico in girls varsity, Matt Jennings in boys freshmen, and Dan Schumann who ran the fastest time of the entire meet.

The cross country team competed in the first league meet against Cromwell, Coginchaug, Morgan, North Branford, and Valley. Both boys and girls teams swept the meet and begin the Shoreline season with 5-0 records. Results from the meet can be downloaded below.
Award for the Best Spirit goes to the girls team:
Saturday the cross country team competed at the Ocean State Invitational in Rhode Island. Varsity boys, lead by Jonah Spector, placed fifth as a team in the highly competitive Championship race. Jonah made the “Elite Performances” list with a 16:30 5k time. Varsity girls came in 3rd with Julie Kelly coming in the top 10 overall. JV Boys had a great day with a second place finish. Alex Inkel and Mike Callis took the 3rd and 4th spots. Freshmen boys competed in a 4000m race with Matt Jennings coming in 3rd and leading the team for a second place finish. JV and Freshman girls both had good days as well.

Varsity did well, again, with the boys winning their race as a team and the girls coming in second. Boys were led by Andrew Meredith and Jonah Spector coming in first and second, then by Dan Schumann in 8th. Top 10 finishers in the girls side were Kelsey D'Amico in 7th and Julie Kelly in 9th. Both teams won their races. Girls were lead by Meara Bodak winning her first 5k with a 22:56, with Alex Zupan, Ava Lindell, Lauren D'Amico, Lizzy Overchuck, and Gabby Flagherty finishing shortly behind. Boys swept the competition with all top 10 finishers. Alex Inkel won the race with a 17:51, being pushed by Mike Callis and Matt Jennings and the rest of the HK JV team. Freshmen ran a 1.5 mile course with top HK finisher Matt Jennings coming in first place (9:00) and Meara Bodak taking fourth (10:52). The upper classmen, uniquely, all ran their 5k course together. Boys took the overall best combined time of the day (1:25:19) and won their division. In the top 10, Andrew Meredith, Dan Schumann, and Jonah Spector took the second through third spots, shortly followed by Conor McCabe in seventh. Girls took second place in their division. Top 10 finishers for the girls were Kelsey D'Amico and Julie Kelly taking third and fourth, Lexie Bouthillier in seventh, and Maggie Fisher taking tenth.
